Zoomars Petting Zoo & Bird Park

ZOOMARS is a surprising find amongst the glitz and glamour of Orange County. It's tucked away in the storybook setting of the Los Rios Historic District in San Juan Capistrano. The Los Rios District spans 40 acres and includes 31 historic structures, including the petting zoos Olivares Home, built in the late 1800s. The one and a half acre property on which it sits is a remaining parcel that was once part of a 2,500 acre Mexican Ranch. Ocean Institute

This research and nature center is located along the west basin of the marina at the end of Dana Point Harbor Drive. The institute features displays of tide pool life and nautical sailing gear, and a huge replica of a California gray whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling. There is also a small gift shop, the proceeds of which help to support educational programs at the center. In February, the institute is also the site of the Festival of the Whales, celebrating the annual winter migration of California gray whales from Arctic waters to the lagoons of Baja California.
